Convert an A4 shipping label to 4 × 6

A4, letter, and 4 × 6 side by side

A4 is the default page size nearly everywhere outside North America, so label PDFs issued by European, Australian, and Asian carriers arrive on a 210 × 297 mm page. Thermal label printers are still sold in 4 × 6 inch or 100 × 150 mm stock, which is a different shape entirely.

Converting an A4 label

Questions

Is 4 × 6 inches the same as 100 × 150 mm?

Not exactly. 4 × 6 inches is 101.6 × 152.4 mm, so a 100 × 150 mm label is 1.6 mm narrower and 2.4 mm shorter. Thermal printers sold with either label are normally tolerant of the difference, and printing 4 × 6 content on 100 × 150 stock loses under a millimetre of margin rather than clipping the barcode.

Should I choose 4 × 6 or a custom 100 × 150 mm output?

Start with 4 × 6. If your printer reports a page size mismatch or trims an edge, use the custom size and enter 3.94 by 5.91 inches, which is 100 × 150 mm.

Why not just print the A4 page and cut it out?

You can, but a thermal printer loaded with label stock cannot. It scales the A4 page onto the roll, which shrinks the barcode along with everything else and risks it failing to scan.

Which carriers issue A4 label PDFs?

Most European and Australian services, including Royal Mail, Evri, DPD, DHL, PostNL, Australia Post, and Amazon outside the United States. The layout differs but the problem is the same: a label placed somewhere on a page much larger than the label.

The A4 page has two labels on it. What happens?

One crop is applied per page, so a two-up A4 sheet gives you the label the tool judged most likely. Use Adjust label area to pick the one you want, convert, then repeat for the other.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. The PDF is processed by JavaScript in your browser and never sent to a server.
